Now that I live out in the suburbs and I have a significantly longer public transportation commute, I have been blowing through books. I may not love public transportation, but I do love this side effect of it! When we were in the apartment, I had a short 10 minute bus ride that I usually had to stand on. Reading books was never in the cards. Now, from the comfort of a seat on the trolley (aka the charlie), I get 30-45 minutes of quality reading time per trip. The first book I picked up for the ride was…
I mentioned this book before. It certainly isn’t the book for everyone, but it is hilarious and hilariously real. If you haven’t at least read the author’s blog, I direct you to this post. And this one.
Next up, I knew I wanted a novel. A good one. I’m all for hilarious anecdotes, but novels are my favorite. I have a long list on my to-read shelf, but most of our books are packed away. So I picked up two new books. Two totally different, how-the-heck-do-you-like-both-of-these-genres books. One was science fiction and one was Jane Austen.
I read the science fiction first.
Orson Scott Card is definitely one of my favorites. I was very skeptical when J told me I should read Ender’s Game. Then I read it and I couldn’t put it down. Then I read Speaker for the Dead (a sequel). Same thing. The Lost Gate is way different than the Ender Saga {more magic, less outerspace} but it was still so-very-good. I read it in a grand total of 4 days I believe. Sadly, I am totally hooked since the ending was a huge cliffhanger and the second book isn’t due out until maybe March 2013. Sigh…
The Jane Austen book I grabbed was Northanger Abbey. I already love it, but on my sleepy morning trolley rides, I found it hard to actually read {I had the same problem with Emma}. So now it is at home for the few times I get a chance to relax with a good book at home. Typically this happens on weekend mornings when I’m up far too early. Needless to say, I needed another new book and now I’m reading…
Yep, Orson Scott Card again. I have no shame. This is yet another different series, a little more along the lines of The Lost Gate instead of the Ender Saga again. I’m still working on it, but it starts out in early-America when everyone was heading West. Boring history novel? Nope. Try fun alternate history novel complete with magic yet again {I was all excited when I realized that the Hio River in the book was just the Ohio and the Mongoly River was my very own Monongahela River}. There is clearly a seventh son involved too. But again, I haven’t gotten too far into it! {A bit of history on the seventh son theory. Even JK Rowling used it a bit!}
So there you have it! A long winded recap of what I’ve been reading the past couple of months. I’m trying to keep my old Good Reads account open and updated. Feel free to send me a friend request! I love company!
PS – You may have noticed on the right side over there a little Good Reads widget. It shows all of my favorite books!
For this final installment of the {hello holiday} gift guides, I wanted to share a few ideas for your book loving friends. I had one particular friend that I had in mind while I was making up this guide. If you have any friends who always have a book in their hand, here are a few ideas!
I hope you have all enjoyed the {hello holiday} gift guides! Be sure the check the rest of them out!

Happy weekend again! This week flew by. All I can think about is spending a weekend lounging around in a big comfy bed, reading, dreaming, scheming… wouldn’t that be wonderful? I hope to get a bit of that this weekend. Do you have any big dreams you’re playing with right now?
Thanks to everyone who celebrated with me yesterday. It means so much to have y’all as readers! You my dears are very much in my thoughts this weekend! I love you all so very much!
{Also, some birthday love to my most wonderful friend and moh today! I know you don’t read as you hardly ever use the computer, but in case you do one day, much love to you!}
I’ve been wanting to share with you some of my recent projects for a while! It’s amazing what you can create when you put your mind to it!
First up, our table needed some freshening up. The place mats we had matched the green/black vibe in our kitchen and living room very well, but with the apartment being so dark, I needed something brighter. So I made two of these:
Then I realized that I have some extra fabric so why not make some matching napkins? Those can’t be hard! So I finished the do-over of our table.
A few days later I still had some extra fabric and I made up this little book cover… it still needs a LOT of design work, but I already love it! My paperbacks get thrown around in my purse and end up getting destroyed. This solves that problem real well!
I need to use a stiffer interfacing and add a little ribbon for a bookmark. I’m also trying to figure out how to accommodate different sized books… we will see how it turns out! {btw, this was not easy to take pictures of, maybe next time I’ll get better ones!}
Have you had any fun projects lately? Please share!
{if you’d like to know how to make any of these, let me know! they were all easy peasy!}
